Dyson V11 Filter Cleaning: The 24-Hour Drying Rule

Is your Dyson V11 showing a 'Filter' error on the LCD screen? Our guide shows you how to wash the purple filter and why skipping the drying step will kill your motor.

Removing the purple filter from the back of a Dyson V11

The Dyson V11 is a smart machine. When its filter is dirty, it won’t just perform poorly—it will stop working and show a message on the LCD screen telling you to “Clean Filter.”

Is your Dyson V11 showing a ‘Filter’ error on the LCD screen? Our guide shows you how to wash the purple filter and why skipping the drying step will kill your motor.

  • Symptoms: filter error on screen, pulsing motor sound, reduced suction
  • Tools: Running Water, 24 Hours of Time
  • Difficulty: Easy

The V11 uses a single, high-efficiency HEPA filter. Here is how to maintain it to avoid expensive motor repairs.

Step 1: The “Twist and Lift”

The filter is located at the back of the motor assembly.

  1. Hold the main body of the vacuum.
  2. Rotate the purple filter housing counter-clockwise.
  3. Lift it straight off.

Step 2: Wash Like a Professional

Do not use soap, detergents, or the dishwasher. Chemicals will degrade the fine HEPA fibers.

  1. Cold Water Only: Run cold tap water into the open end of the filter.
  2. The Shake: Tap the filter upside down in the sink to loosen deep dust.
  3. The Squeeze: Gently squeeze the paper pleats for 30 seconds to work the water through.
  4. Repeat: Keep washing until the water runs crystal clear.

Step 3: The Golden Rule (24-Hour Drying)

IMPORTANT: NEVER put a damp filter back into your Dyson V11. If moisture reaches the 125,000 RPM motor, it will short-circuit instantly. This repair is not covered under warranty.

  • Place the filter in a warm, dry spot (near a window or radiator).
  • Wait at least 24 hours.
  • Even if the outside feels dry, the thick center core may still be wet. Shake it; if it feels heavy or cold, it needs more time.

How Often Should I Clean It?

Dyson recommends once a month. However, if you have pets or a lot of carpet, the high-torque motor will pull in fine dust faster. If you see the “Filter” message more than once a month, it might be time to buy a second filter so you can use one while the other is drying.
