Vacuum Technical Glossary

Confused by technical jargon? Our glossary simplifies complex vacuum technology terms into easy-to-understand definitions. Perfect for homeowners and DIY repair enthusiasts.

A

Agitator

Mechanical

Another term for the brushroll, specifically referring to its ability to vibrate carpet fibers to release stuck-on dirt.

Air Watts

Performance

A measurement of the suction power and effectiveness of a vacuum cleaner, calculating both airflow and water lift to show total cleaning energy at the nozzle.

B

Brushless Motor

Technology

An advanced motor design that uses magnets instead of carbon brushes to generate power. They are more efficient, run cooler, and last significantly longer than traditional motors.

Brushroll

Mechanical

The rotating cylindrical component at the base of a vacuum cleaners intake. It uses bristles to agitate carpet fibers and loosen deeply embedded dirt.

C

CFM

Performance

Cubic Feet per Minute. A measurement of airflow volume that indicates how much air the vacuum motor can move in one minute. Higher CFM usually means better heavy-debris pickup.

Cyclonic Action

Technology

A technology where air and dust are spun at high speeds in a circular motion, using centrifugal force to separate dirt from the air before it reaches the filter.

H

HEPA Filter

Filtration

High-Efficiency Particulate Air. A type of pleated mechanical air filter that can remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns.

P

Post-Motor Filter

Filtration

The final stage of filtration located after the motor. Often a HEPA filter, it ensures the air exhausted back into the room is clean.

Pre-Motor Filter

Filtration

The filter located before the motor, usually made of foam or felt. Its primary job is to protect the motor from dust and large debris.

S

Sealed System

Technology

A vacuum design ensuring that all air sucked into the machine passes through the HEPA filter without leaking out of the housing or seals.

Suction Lift (Water Lift)

Performance

A measure of how many inches of water a vacuum motor can pull up a tube. High water lift is crucial for deep cleaning carpets and picking up heavy particles.

T

Thermal Cut-Off

Safety

A safety feature that automatically shuts down the vacuum motor if it starts to overheat, preventing permanent damage to the machine.
